VISUAL and the agriculture remote sensing

In VISUAL we work with the agriculture remote sensing last technologies. The Sentinel 2 images (L2A) allow us to develop high value products to the agriculture like the NVDI

Our product of general NDVI in the traditional value range from -1 to 1 has been amplified from the currents five categories (Very low, low, medium low, medium high and high) to ten categories in colours range in relation to the vegetation vigour( from red to green). This increase will provide more perception to the phonological state of crops thanks to the excellent Sentinel 2 10 meters high resolution. Improve and look for perfection in our products enables us to offer our products with many details to our customers.

Unlike the general NDVI, the value range of the specialised NDVI, fits to a value range, with maximum and minimum, determined from a careful investigation conducted by our specialist in agriculture remote sensing.

Therefore, we offer a more precise crop monitorisation of our customers that will be available each five days.

This specialization of the NDVI will be a useful tool for the decision making of the farmers because it will allow our customer to improve its management and planning of their crops.

The following images are part of an NDVI example specialised in vineyard crop plots. It is a seasonal series where it can be seen how the NDVI is changing throughout the year starting in June of 2019 and ending in July of 2020. With the increase of categories and the new colour range is possible to associate the crop vigour to the darkest greens.

Where do satellital images of VISUAL come from? Copernicus, ESA and Sentinel

VISUAL includes satelital images from Copernicus ESA to make easier the precise crops tracking with historic and evolution reports per land plot. Do you want to know more?

The copernicus program of ESA( European special agency) is one of the earth observation programs more ambitious in the European level.This program has been designed to provide precise updated information and easy to access by the users with the goal of improving the environment management and with interesting applications for the precision agriculture.

The Sentinel (1,2,3,4,5,5p) take part of the spacial missions developed by the ESA to attend the different necessities of Copernicus like the monitoring of the atmosphere, ocean and the earth’s surface. Sentinel-2 is a mission that was in progress since the end of 2015.

It has two satellites Sentinel 2A and Sentinel 2B designed to monitor the earth’s surface each five days: vegetation cover, water bodies, soil uses and coast areas.

Sentinel 2 owns high radiometric resolution multispectral channels, with 13 spectral bands centred in the visible and infared range and with also its high special resolution of 10,20 and 60 meters provides precise information.

Each Sentinel 2 covers a 290km area. Among the advantages of the Sentinel are the easy access, and also they are free.

The importance of the agriculture remote sensing

The population growth in the last decades has played a higher pressure in the agriculture sector because it has been increased the demand of high quality food.

According to FAO( Food and Agriculture Organization) estimations, the agriculture has to increase a 75% of its production in 2050. To achieve this goal is crucial to have the right tools which allow us to know the agriculture recent situation.

The remote sensing or the satellite observation are tools that give us the possibility to check the crops in a synoptic remote and non-destructive way.

Thanks to the satellite images periodicity for instance the Sentinel 2 images each 5 days, is possible to obtain temporary series that enables us to track: the crop’s phenological state, detect growth patterns, problems like plagues or diseases, water requirements and other factors that will determine its production.
